FUNAI ARTS STUDENTS DISPLAY THEIR WORKS

The Pioneer Students of the Department of Fine and Applied Arts/Music, Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo, Ebonyi state on 17th August, 2016 exhibited their art works at the departmental building in the University.

The art exhibition which marked the end of their academic journey in the University also brought to limelight the level of professionalism, sellable skills and knowledge the University has impacted into them over the past four years through the course of their study.

Welcoming the audience to the event, the Head Department of Fine and Applied Arts/Music, Prof. Chris Ebhigbo stated that the young graduates have been rightly taught and now possessed the right balance of talent, work ethics and drive to excel as accomplished artists in the nearest future.

“I am convinced that these young artists would make the University and the country proud in the nearest future because of the quality of learning they have been exposed to in this world class University”, he enthused.

The event witnessed the exhibition of the art works of Umoke A. Umoke, Akpan Joshua, Olurunnisola Grace M. and Ifemere Paschal Chijioke, all pioneer graduates of the department which included among other things: landscape, Agbogho muo, tea sets, flower vases, ceramic tiles, floor tiles, ceramic sculptor, prints, tile and dye,  throw pillow, bill board, posters, handbill, postage stamp and customised T-shirts.

Buttressing the professionalism of the art works on display, Mr. Samuel Echem, one of the Lecturers in the department praised the originality, creativity and imagination of the budding artists, stating that they created a series of drawings and paintings, and did some works on Life and Still painting, Mixed Media Painting, Advanced Drawing and Exploration of Indegenious Art Forms.

Speaking at the end of the exhibition, one of the young artists, Akpan Joshua, who majored in Graphic Arts, thanked the University for preparing them for the needs of the 21st century economy. He stated “I cannot wait to get to the labour market to showcase my knowledge and understanding of the universal and timeless qualities that identify all great arts.”

“The knowledge I have gained here has helped me to apppreciate and understand the art of different eras; movements, styles and technique. With all these, I can develop, evaluate and improve myself hoping that in no distance time my works will be a masterpiece”, he concluded.

The arts exhibition was a veritable testament to the fact that Nigerian youths are very talented and if properly groomed and given the right platforms, like the one provided by the University, would excel in every endeavor.

In other to keep the entire University community abreast with the developments in the University and engender the spirit of partnership, collaboration and unity of purpose that will lead to the achievement of the vision of a world-class University, the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Ndufu Alike Ikwo, Ebonyi State, Professor Chinedum Nwajiuba on Tuesday, August 30th, 2016 presented the scorecard of his administration to the University congregation.

 In his maiden meeting with the University Community after his assumption of office on February 26th, 2016, at the School Auditorium, Professor Nwajiuba reiterated his irrevocable commitment to excellence and Integrity, and transparency and accountability in managing the affairs of the University while also calling on staff to partner and collaborate with him in taking the University to enviable heights.  

On infrastructure, the Vice Chancellor stated that since assumption of office, his administration has achieved monumental feats. These feats he noted are: Landscaping of the environment, connection of the University to national power grid in other to reduce the enormous money spent on diesel, installation of transformers to step down and connect power to offices, hostels, lecture halls and laboratories, on-going fencing of the University community to ensure security of life and property, flag off for the construction of 2, 500 sitter auditorium and attraction of investors to partner the University on key and strategic areas like the Advanced Space Technology Application Laboratory which is to be built by the National Centre for Remote Sensing (NCRS), One kilo metre of internal road to be constructed by Executive Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. Dave Umahi, donation of a trailer load of cement by the INEC Commissioner representing the South-East Zone, Ambassador Lawrence Nwuruku, sinking of two boreholes and provision of television sets and satellite decoder for the female hostel by the Senator representing Ebonyi Central in the National Assemly, Chief Obinna Ogba and many others.

The Vice Chancellor further noted that many uncompleted projects he inherited from previous administration are receiving urgent attention in other to ensure conducive environment for teaching, learning and research, adding that the relocation of Faculties of Engineering and Technology and Basic Medical Sciences from the take Off Site to the Permanent Site of the University are testaments of infrastructural renaissance under his administration.

On the academic sphere, Professor Nwajiuba said it was imperative to create new and demerge fused faculties and departments for academic excellence and to provide more admission opportunities for the teeming youths of Nigeria, while also maintaining quality.  For this reason, Faculty of Management and Social Sciences was carved out from Humanities and Social Sciences, while also introducing Banking and Finance as a new discipline. Two new Faculties of Agriculture and Education were also established after getting approval from the National Universities Commission to ensure the programmes meet national and international best practices.

Professor Nwajiuba decried the erosion of academic excellence and dearth of integrity in Nigerian Universities especially on the part of academics, saying ‘’no institution can grow above the level of her academics’’ and stressed the need for lecturers to imbibe international best practices in their intellectual works so that the University can realise its goal of graduating students that can soar like eagles in all spheres of life.

The Vice Chancellor maintained that vices such as sexual harassments, sale of marks, admission racketeering, lateness and absenteeism were unethical and must be shunned by all staff of the University, adding that culprits will definitely be punished accordingly. And further enjoined all staff to join hands with him to make the University a Centre of Excellence and Integrity where students are groomed to meet the demands of globalized economy and pledged the commitment of the University Management to improved staff welfare.

The high point of the meeting was a pledge to name the main University Library after the pioneer Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof.Oye Ibidapo-Obe and also to name the Administrative building after the Pioneer Registrar, Mr. Gabriel O. Chukwu by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Nwajiuba after due consultation with the University Governing council.

He stated “we shall consult with the University Governing Council and National Universities Commission and take into cognizance of the invaluable works done by Prof. Oye Ibidapo-Obe and Mr. Gabriel O. Chukwu as pioneers Vice Chancellor and Registrar respectively, we will name the University Library and Administrative block after them in appreciation.”

-Drums up support for New Dean

It was an end to a fruitful era, as the Faculty of Science, Federal University    Ndufu-Alike Ikwo, on Monday, 29th August, 2016, organized an extraordinary and valedictory meeting for the pioneer Dean of the Faculty at the Physics Laboratory.

The meeting was to celebrate the numerous achievements of Prof. Michael U. Onuu as the pioneer Dean of the Faculty, and also to usher in the tenure of      Prof. F.X.O Ugodulunwa as the new Dean, with effect from September 1st, 2016.

In his valedictory remarks, Prof. Michael U. Onuu thanked the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba, the Faculty Board, Heads of Department and other members of staff for their unflinching support during his tenure which he said started on August 18th, 2013.

 He noted: “Looking back, I have no single regret because there are numerous achievements to reckon with during my tenure.” And specifically praised the   Vice-Chancellor for his vision and support to the Faculty which made them excel in various projects they had embarked on to make the Faculty of Science meet international academic best practices.

Prof. Onnu further charged the staff to extend the same hands of fellowship and support to the new Dean, Prof. Ugodulunwa to enable him keep up with not just the noble goals of the Faculty but also the vision of the University as a world class institution of learning. He also enjoined them to always remember their slogan of, “Do it as unto the Lord” and added that, ‘responsibility is service and service is responsibility’.

Recounting his landmark achievements, Prof. Onuu mentioned the various committees he inaugurated to function in various capacities, capacity building of staff and supporting twenty-five (25) academic lecturers from the Faculty to study overseas. The Dean noted that his tenure produced Memoranda of Understanding and linkages with foreign universities and organizations. Such institutions include: Kagoshima University in Japan; Rice University in United States of America and the National Space Research Development Agency which he disclosed was about to build Remote Sensing Center in the University.

He also used the occasion to request the Vice-Chancellor’s intervention in demerging some departments into different academic programmes like Biology/microbiology/Biotechnology and Chemistry//Biochemistry/Molecular Biology in the faculty to make the students focused on their chosen disciplines, and thus make the University a world class institution.

The Vice- Chancellor who was represented in the event by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Sunday Elom commended Prof. Onuu for his doggedness and resilience in driving the wheel of the faculty to enviable height. The Vice Chancellor further admonished the staff to maintain the peace in their relationship with their new Dean, as this will enhance their work capacity, adding that the Vice Chancellor had vowed to pursue excellence and integrity in order to set the University on the part of greatness.  

The highpoint of the meeting was the release of the Faculty’s maiden Newsletter to the public.

NKWAGU/NDUFU-ALIKE IKWO ROAD: FUNAI VC EXTOLS EBONYI STATE GOVERNOR

The Vice Chancellor who led other members of the University Management on a ‘thank you’ visit said the University was eternally grateful for the road initiated and being completed by the Governor, which has eased the problems of transportation to the University and its attendant loss in man-hour by staff, students and visitors due to the deplorable state of the Nkwagu- Ikwo road prior to his intervention.

Prof. Nwajiuba praised the efforts of the Governor in reconstructing the University road  despite the economic crunch the nation is facing, noting the God will surely bless and keep him to continue his good works.

He said: ‘’ Your Excellency you promised to reconstruct our University road and you kept your words. So we have come to say thank you for this good gesture.  We have nothing much to offer you. Since we don’t have a post graduate school yet, we cannot give you an honorary degree. But all we have to say is thank you”.

“You made a commitment and you have kept to it. We shall not be shy to let the entire world know that we are very grateful. And so we say thank you.”

‘’Your Excellency, you did not just do the road to FUNAI; you constructed it with cement, technology which is rare in our country. Such road is rarely done by politicians but by a statesman like you.”

The Vice Chancellor further reminded the Governor of his earlier promise of helping the University construct 1 kilometre of internal road that would link the University Main Gate to the campus.

Responding, Engr. Umahi vowed to complete the ongoing road project and to ensure that its ‘’shoulders’’ are also completed to guard against early dilapidation. He further pledged to contribute 50% of the project funds for the construction of internal link road after the feasibility study has been done. He added that the State Government will connect the University to the public water supply before December of 2016, and urged the University to provide overhead tanks for easy water reticulation.

The highpoint of the visit was the presentation of plaque to the Governor by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Nwajiuba.

INTRODUCING GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING CENTRE OF THE FEDERAL UNIVERSITY, NDUFU-ALIKE, IKWO, EBONYI STATE

The Federal University,Ndufu-Alike,Ikwo, Ebonyi State recently introduced and equipped her Campus Guidance and Counseling centre to cater for the needs of her students, Academic, Non-Academic Staff and other members of the university community.

  • Such needs include: Personal social concerns such as channels of communication, the university organogram and authority structure, relationship matters, premarital information, etc.
  • Academic needs which include courses of study available and their entry requirements, academic programme/calendar for the semester qua session, modalities for possible change of course, continuous assessment modes, examinations and records as well as sanctions for cases of malpractice, available scholarships awards and criteria for securing same/them etc.
  • Vocational needs namely entrepreneurial training, marketing trends, product packaging and advertorial as well as changing roles of women vis-à-vis career needs of the female gender, job creation, prospects and wealth creation and distribution.
  • Needs of special people which include specially gifted students, students with notable challenges, financially stressed students, etc.
  • Academic and non-academic staff needs free flow of information to and from various departments and the centre.
  • Immediate university community worthwhile and permissible information about the university from the centre. Note- the centre serves as gateway between the university and the immediate community.
  • Foreign students: The centre equally caters in the information need of alien/foreign students, especially those seeking for admission into various courses of study.

MRS NWUDU NGOZI

The Guidance and Counseling Centre of the University is manned by Nwudu Ngozi.T (Mrs.) Assistant Registrar. Mrs.  Nwudu Ngozi has worked as the Unit Head of Male Hostel under Students Affairs Department and a Guidance Counselor and presently the Coordinator of Guidance and Counselling Centre Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ikwo(FUNAI). She has a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) degree in Guidance and Counseling/Health Science from Nnamdi Azikwe University Awka Nigeria.

     She has finished her Doctorate Programme in the University of Nigeria Nsukka. She is a member of National Union of Teachers (NUT) and a member of Counselling Association of Nigeria (CASON). She is also a member of Nigeria Council of Educational Psychologists of Nigeria.

She worked as the Guidance Counselor at College of Education Nsugbe Enugu State distance programme.

 Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the post of Registrar, Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ikwo, Ebonyi State.

The University

The Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ikwo, Ebonyi State was established in 2011 by the Federal Government of Nigeria. The University strives to be a relevant centre of learning and research. It is poised to be a hub for the economic transformation and development of its environment through creative and innovative endeavours. It is committed to the production of high level manpower for the achievement of national developmental goals and global relevance.

Registrar

The Registrar is the Chief Administrative Officer of the University and shall be responsible to the Vice Chancellor for the day-to-to administrative work of the University except as regards matters for which the Bursar is responsible. The Registrar is also the Secretary to the Council, Senate, Congregation and Convocation. The candidates for the position must not be more than sixty (60) years of age at the time of appointment. The appointment is for a period of five (5) years subject to one (1) year extension.

Qualification and Experience

Candidates must:

  • Possess a good honours degree from a recognized University;
  • Have had at least fifteen (15) years’ experience in University Administration;
  • Be a Deputy Registrar;
  • Be a member of a recognized administrative (professional) body;
  • Be computer literate;
  • Be physically and mentally fit;
  • Be a person of high integrity and good leadership qualities.

Possession of a higher degree will be an advantage.

This is as applicable in the Federal Public Service, Federal Universities of Nigeria and as may be determined from time to time by the University Governing Council.

  1. Online registration commences on Monday 19th September  and ends on Monday 10th October, 2016. Those who fail to register within the period WILL NOT be screened.

The Registrar of Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo, Mr. Gabriel Oko Chukwu was on 14th September, 2016 honoured by the Afikpo North Law Students Association of Ebonyi State University with an award for excellence service to humanity.

Presenting the award to the Registrar in his office, the President of the Association, Christian Uro Akani, said “he has been an exemplary Registrar.  The award is in recognition of his selfless and humanitarian service and relentless effort towards empowering the youths of Ebonyi State and beyond.”

Akani who led other members of the association that included the Secretary, Egwu Augustine Eze further said:”The accolade is given to people of distinction for their service in human capital development and other areas of human endeavors, and we are happy to select him (Registrar) because of his numerous efforts in helping the youths of Nigeria reach their goals.’’

In his acceptance speech, Mr. Chukwu thanked the association for recognizing him for the award out of other deserving people, noting that he was a mere instrument in the hands of God and stressed that the award would spur him on in every aspects of life.

Recounting how he started as a clerical officer in the then Imo State Government, the Registrar admonished the students not to lose hope in Nigeria, stressing that the country would definitely overcome its challenges and enjoined them to be focused, resilient and patient in pursuing their goals.
