The Federal University Ndufu Alike Ikwo was on Tuesday, 2nd August, 2016 at the University’s multi-purpose Hall, organized workshop to her pioneer graduating students courtesy of employability and entrepreneurial centre led by its out-going director, Associate Prof. Icha Ituma.

DR. AFAM ICHA-ITUMA, OUT-GOING DIRECTOR OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND EMPLOYABILITY CENTRE IN AN OPENING REMARKS
The Vice-Chancellor of the University Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba who was represented by the Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof.Philip Umoke while declaring the workshop open, charged the graduating students to go into the world and showcase all they had acquired in the classroom as world class university graduates that were tutored on how to cross their t’s and dot their i’s.

Earlier in his keynote address, the director of the programme, Dr. Icha Ituma applauded the Vice-Chancellor for the vision, continuity and effort to uphold teaching and learning as well as skill acquisition in the university. He stressed that such were the formidable tools needed to combat unemployment and unemployability.
The workshop had numerous resource persons who drilled the graduands on several thought-provoking lectures on how to surmount live challenges and rise to the next rung of the ladder in life.

MR. CHRIS UWADOKA, SA TO THE VC AND RESOURCE PERSON DELIVERING A LECTURE AT THE EVENT
Speaking on the topic, ’Developing Employability Skills’, Mr. Chris Uwadoka enjoined the out-going students to develop employability skills to be able to work successfully and prosper. He posited that the first two letters in unemployment represent United Nations and her global sickness of lack of job which should not be considered by a focused individual knowing full well that employability contained two striking words,’ employ’ and ‘ability’, adding that it takes the attributes of achievement, understanding and personal value to secure employment.
Dr. Clement Otor addressing the attendants on ‘The Use of ICT in Job Hunting and Networking’ stressed on the imperativeness of using Information and Communication Technology tools in job hunting as it facilitated the process and connections in the ‘what next’ question. He noted that every potential graduate was unique and had a special skill to acquire job which would be easily done by identifying one’s unique selling point to excel above others.

DR. IHUOMA ANYANWU, AN ENVIRONMENTALIST DELIVERING HER OWN LECTURE AT THE SEMINAR
Speaking on the topic, ‘Writing CVs and Cover Letter’, Dr. Ihuoma Anyanwu charged the participants to prepare their CVs in concise forms devoid of irregularities and jargons. She stressed that CVs were marketing document and first introduction letter to an employer that do not guarantee jobs but only to secure interview for an applicant.
She described a cover letter as a statement of interest in furtherance to information that should contain what one was are looking for, why one was applying, one’s matching skills, confident conclusion and availability for interview.

PROF. IKE-ELECHI OGBA, A RESOURCE PERSON SPEAKING AT THE OCCASION
Professor Ike-Elechi Ogba expounding on the topic; ‘Work Ethics and Corporate Etiquette’ charged the graduating students to always show proper conduct in the work environments that would be guided by an individual’s norms, values and moral principles. He said that examples abound of people in the lower rung that rose to the apex because of their hard work, discipline and moral attitude.
Mr. Nnaemeka Nwachukwu delivering his speech on how to shine in an interview enjoined them to have direct focus on the purpose of the interview and prepare adequately for the interview. He noted that to be invited for an interview was an achievement that required standard quality to outshine others like expression, motivation, and enthusiasm.
He charged them to be punctual, dress neatly and smartly and show eye contact and have a hand shake with an interviewer. Above all, Mr. Nwachukwu informed them to research on both the organization and the employer so as to have good background knowledge of the employer.
The ‘Role of Mentorship in Career Development’ was delivered by Dr. Chris Ogwa who charged the graduating students to find relevant role models now in the absence of their lecturers to rely on for guidance and proper information in building their career.
Dr. MaryAnn Onyeka Anekwe speaking on the topic, ‘Exploring Further Studies Abroad’ advised the students to strive to study overseas as there were many opportunities ahead of them which could put them ahead of their counterparts. She warned that in spite the the numerous opportunities and prospects, there were also challenges that would confront such individuals studying abroad such as language barrier, feeling of isolation, distractions and some physical and environmental factors like racism, weather, nostalgia, loneliness and the issue of wanting to remain. She charged them to acquire interpersonal skills and adaptability skills to surmount those challenges and break the yoke.

In a vote of thanks one of the graduating student Obelenwa Osinachi, thanked the management of FUNAI for taking the issue of their welfare after graduation seriously through the seminar and promised that they would put all they had learned into positive use.
